The main problem I have always had with building a homemade aeroponics system is the clogging spray nozzles. I was in a hydroponics supply store the other day when it occurred to me the aeroponics system I was looking at did not use any spray heads. As I looked over the new hydroponic gardening system, I marveled at how simple the design really was. With the right pump and correct assembly, the following homemade aeroponics system is relatively problem free.

There are four main parts to this simple system. There is a 20 gallon (75 liter) reservoir. There are several channels 4 or 6 inches in diameter and several feet long. Every 6 or 8 inches there is a hole drilled into the channel to accomodate a plant. The channels are pitched to allow drainage back to the reservoir. Next is a 1/2 inch line, run down the center of each channel and capped at the end. All the lines are connected at the other end by a manifold. Finally, the manifold attaches to a pump. At any point along the 1/2 line where spray is desired a 1/16 inch drill bit is used to cleanly make a small hole (usually one between each plant site).

First, 1/2 inch PVC is cut to length and capped at one end. Spray locations are marked and drilled into the 1/2 inch PVC. A 1/2 inch line is run through the length of each channel, which is made from 4 or 6 inch PVC. The line is held in place by drilling two small holes and fastening a zip tie every few feet.

One end of each channel will have to be sealed with an end cap. The other end may be sealed or left open, depending on how drainage back to the reservoir is to be accomplished. 2 1/2 or 3 inch holes are cut every 6 to 8 inches in the channel to accomodate netted pots (or other planting containers).

At one end of the homemade aeroponics system, the 1/2 inch lines elbow out of their channels and are joined together by a series of "T" fittings. This is known as the manifold. One end of the manifold is left open to connect to the pump. Your pump may be an external pump or you may use a submersible pump. Either way, the pump needs to be able to deliver a water pressure of 45 to 60 psi to each of the 1/2 inch lines coming from the manifold.

Finally, any large, cheap, plastic storage tote may be used for the nutrient reservoir. A homemade aeroponics system with 24 to 36 plant sites would require a 20 gallon (75 liter) reservoir. It is always best to choose a dark tote, to keep as much light from the nutrient reservoir as possible. This will prevent algae growth and therefore help prevent fungus gnats. Whenever constructing a homemade hydroponics system you should always use PVC, and not CPVC. CPVC is known to slowly leach harmful chemicals. To prevent leaks, be sure to use PVC cleaner on all parts BEFORE you apply PVC glue and join the parts.

Many people choose to set up an indoor garden as an alternative to a traditional plant growing area established in the outdoors. One of the advantages of an indoor growing space is that it is possible to control external factors such as temperature, lighting, and ambiance, making it easier to grow a variety of fruits, vegetables, plants, and crops out of season. If you are interested in setting up a garden indoors, here are some tips on creating your very own hydroponic indoor garden.

1. Choosing an area to grow your plants

Although it is possible to grow plants in just about any indoor space, you will want to ensure that this space receives plenty of good ventilation, as good ventilation is fundamental to healthy plant growth. Also, make sure that your growing area is established with access to stable electricity and water. An excellent place to create an indoor hydroponic garden is within your basement, as here the air tends to be cool and dry.

2. Preparing the area

An important part of growing plants indoors involves adequate control of external lighting. You can block your windows with thick curtains or wooden boarding where necessary. Another point to remember is that plants tend to elevate the overall humidity levels of the area in which they are placed, and if you are growing an indoor garden it is possible that mold growth could occur. Make sure to keep the area as uncluttered as possible by removing any unnecessary furniture and carpets. You can set up an appropriate ventilation system by channeling air in through a plastic duct built close to ground level (so as to avoid external sunlight) and installing a fan to blow out air brought into the room via the ceiling area.

3. Growing

This is the tricky part. Basically you will need strong lamps to stimulate optimum plant growth and photosynthesis. Some plants require a specific period of light over a 24 hour period that varies from other plants. For this reason, you will want to study the fundamentals of how to grow the plants you are going to have well in advance of setting up your hydroponic system.

4. Hydroponics

Since you will not be using soil, but rather a water-based solution of nutrients and minerals, you will likely be saving a reasonable amount of money on extra fertilization for soil. Using a hydroponic system allows you to control the exact nutrient balance necessary for your plants to grow strong and healthy, but you will need to research and find out exactly what nutrients and what quantities should be included within your nutrient solution. There are plenty of books available on this subject and a wealth of information to be found form online sources.

You can purchase all of the equipment and products necessary to building an indoor garden at a local hydroponic store or at an online retailer. Make sure that you are aware of your space requirements as on many occasions you will need a lot more room than you might have originally thought.

If you want to learn how to make an indoor hydroponic garden, you need to know the difference between an active hydroponic area and a passive one. Active hydroponic systems pass a nutrient solution over the plant roots. You will need a large sized planting medium like vermiculite, perlite and pea gravel. To make an indoor hydroponic system passively, you will be providing a system that uses a wick or capillary system to feed your plants. The wick, which works like a kerosene lamp, sucks your nutrient solution via its reservoir, to the root system of the plant. Sand, peat moss or sawdust is the usual medium for growing hydroponics passively. It is quite easy to begin. You need a lot of natural light for the best results. A greenhouse is ideal.

Hydroponically grown foods taste better and are high in nutrients. You can grow more plants in a small space than with regular gardening. If you choose your plants wisely, you can also repel pests. Citronella plants repel mosquitoes and various other pests.

Easy Hydroponics

The first thing to do when learning how to make an indoor hydroponic is to decide exactly what you want to grow. Decide how many of each plant you want. How much area will you need to grow your desired quantity of plants? Let's say you want to grow a mixture of 66 cabbages and silverbeet. This can be grown hydroponically in 5 pipes of 4 inch round and 10 feet by 6 feet wide. This means you need a 6 feet square area for growing.

Mark and space 4 inch holes for the 4 inch diameter pots you are going to use. Shade cloth is helpful for the first month and if the climate is very warm. Mix fertilizer and water to a strength of 20 to 24 CF. The resulting pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5. Rinse the seedlings to remove any dirt before planting them. Don't be too generous with nutrients. Hydroponic plants can cope with not enough nutrients but can die if you give them too much.

You can use chopped rockwool, rockwool slabs, blocks or cubes, fired clay or a mixture of fired clay and rockwool as a growing medium. Cubed chopped rockwool or fired clay are recommended but you can use any of these and expect good results.

Planting

Plant the seedlings in the hydroponic solution. You need to check the water daily if you want to successfully learn how to make an indoor hydroponic system. This is to ensure the nutrient to water ratio is right. Water evaporates which is why you have to keep an eye on it. Hydroponic gardening is not for you if you can't check it frequently.

Your hydroponic plants will grow for 3 to 5 months. You have to watch out for root rot and pests during this time. When your plants are ready, you can harvest them. It can be expensive if you want to discover how to make an indoor hydroponic system but the results are usually well worth it.
